A Gift from My Paw Paw
The quarantine is strange and difficult. And today is a fairly sad one for my family, since my wonderful grandfather passed away nine years ago on this day. But this is not a sad post! This is a post about dreams, and how even under quarantine they keep going.
I have carried him with me in my heart and taken him wherever I've gone.
For example, my Paw Paw was a wine aficionado—he had owned a variety of wine shops, nightclubs, and restaurants over the years—so when I had an opportunity to tour wine country while studying abroad in France, I took his picture with me so I could take pictures of him touring around with me! He traveled around Bordeaux with me through the various vineyards, learning about the dessert wines of Sauternes at Château Guiraud, the Roman vineyards established in the medieval town of Saint-Émilion, and the wines made at the home of Renaissance writer Michel de Montaigne.
(Yes. That's me. I disapprove of the pastel plaid shirt entirely. I blame my mother.)
Even though my Paw Paw isn't with me right now, parts of him carry on with me. And even though I am quarantined at home, I still have my travels carrying on with me.
I am still the woman who stood on top of Saint-Émilion and felt joy like sunshine rising in my chest, sunlight beaming through my ribcage. The passage of time or the view from inside my apartment doesn't change that. And I still feel it: the sunlight and the breeze tossing my skirt and the promise of a thousand new adventures to come afterward.
So even inside during a quarantine, there is great joy. Some surprises, some little wonders.
I was delighted to discover today something I've been waiting for... I now officially have an Amazon listing for my forthcoming book and an Amazon author page! Something about being able to click the yellow button that says "this is me" and confirm that I'm about to be a published author is just unbelievable. A dream come true!
I like to think that this is my Paw Paw waving hello and sending a little gift down during these strange quarantine times!
My book doesn't have cover art yet, but I can't wait to see what it'll be. (Fun fact: generally, the author has no control over the cover art... or the book title.)
